The Valley
Autumn Newsletter Vinyard
Dear Friend of Taylors,
Welcome to the Autumn edition of our news from the valley. Vintage 2011 is almost over with only a small amount of fruit from the Adelaide Hills still to come into the winery. We began harvesting in early March with a small parcel of Chardonnay from one of our growers. By the end of March we had picked all of the Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Semillon, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris from our estate as well as some Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris from the Adelaide Hills and some Shiraz from McLaren Vale. The Shiraz and Merlot growing on the estate was picked in early April. Vintage is always a busy and exciting time of year for everyone at the winery with Helen McCarthy, our senior winemaker and Colin Hinze, our viticulturist out in the field over the course of vintage ensuring the quality of the fruit we receive is top notch and the flavour profiles right in the optimum zone. To date, the white wines that have completed fermentation are looking great, whilst the red fruit coming in shows great promise too, although quantities will be down as less fruit was picked due to adverse weather conditions. Cabernet Sauvignon is always the last variety we pick and the grapes are enjoying ideal ripening conditions in the lead up to their harvest. Given the long ripening period, Cabernet Sauvignon may indeed turn out to be the pick of vintage 2011.

From everyone at Taylors Wines we hope you have a safe and happy Easter break!

Chardonnay du Monde recognises the best chardonnay from around the world. It was held from 9th to 12th March 2011 at Château des Ravatys, the wine estate of the Pasteur Institute, at Saint Lager, in the Burgundy wine region of France. Close to 1000 wines from 38 countries were tasted and after 4 days of judging, only 53 Gold medals were awarded. Taylors Eighty Acres Clare Valley Chardonnay 2010 triumphed over many rivals from across the globe, and was the only Australian Wine to be awarded a Gold medal, even beating wines with a recommended retail price of well over $130!

Australia's First Families of Wine
Taylors Wines celebrates
the 1st Anniversary of this
home-grown collective.

Home-Grown Collective

As some of you already know, Australia's First Families of Wine (AFFW) is a collective of twelve of Australia's foremost multi-generational, quality-focused winemaking families, all intent on showcasing the best of Australian wine to the world. The AFFW anniversary was celebrated in true style with two events held on the 89th floor of Eureka, with stunning views overlooking Melbourne. Author Graeme Lofts, a wine enthusiast, was so inspired by the AFFW story that he's written a book reflecting on each of the twelve families, their history, stories, heritage and contribution to the Australian wine landscape.
