With the Clare Valley just an hour and a half’s drive (depending on how many stops you make along the scenic way) from Adelaide, it’s the perfect destination for a relaxing weekend, or mid week break.
The valley’s rich cultural history dating back 160 years make it a vibrant and fascinating region, whilst the dozens of farms, weekly markets, restaurants, country pubs and of course, wineries will satisfy and delight any discerning gourmand. The only problem may be deciding what to do next…
Here’s a few family favourites:
Local Markets: it's well worth planning a trip to coincide with one of the monthly markets held throughout the region – and with a number to choose from, chances are you won’t have to stray far: Try Burra Market or the Clare Showgrounds Country Market – two of the best places to buy local produce at farm prices, both held on the first weekend of every month. The Riverton Market is held at the Riverton Community Hall on the second Saturday of each month, while the Sevenhill Monthly Market is held at the Madonna Hall on the last Saturday of each month
The Riesling Trail: When in Rome…this is an absolute must. Traversing the picturesque region for 25kms, this is one of the best ways to enjoy the scenery between the towns of Auburn and Clare – and it’s the perfect excuse to sample a few refreshing Rieslings along the way. Following the old railway line, the trail takes you through the region’s stunning wine and bush country, via pretty stone villages, cosy cottages, as well as the odd one or two award-winning wineries. The Trail can be followed by bike – allow a good few hours, or the best part of the day on foot – depending on how many stops you make.
The track either commences or finishes in Auburn – depending on which way your compass is guiding you - so make sure you pop into Taylors cellar door, on Taylors Road, Auburn to say hello at one end of your trip.

Gourmet Valley Weekend: if you can time a trip to coincide with the annual Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend – you won’t be disappointed! One of the longest running food and wine festivals of its kind, the event takes place in May, and many visitors flock to the region to take part in the fun. Expect live bands, vintage tastings, gourmet food and lots more.
Accommodation: finding a place to stay in the valley is not difficult, with everything from cosy cottages, B&Bs, to luxury apartments and farmhouses to choose from. However things can get a little busy in holiday seasons, so make sure you book ahead.
