September 2008 - Taylors Gewürztraminer awarded trophy at Royal Perth Wine Show

Media Release
September 2008

Award winning family winery Taylors have added another trophy to their burgeoning cabinet with the Trophy for Best Dry White Varietal for their 2008 Estate Gewürztraminer, at the Royal Perth Wine Show.

Results were announced at an awards presentation breakfast at Claremont Showground this morning, Friday 12 September with judges tasting over 2000 entries from around Australia and New Zealand.

Perhaps its not surprising that Gewürztraminer would thrive in the cooler regions of the Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills as whilst the name comes from Germany, it is in the French region of Alsace that the variety has seen the greatest success, where the climate is very similar.

The 2008 Taylors Gewürztraminer is a premium quality blend of fruit from the Taylors family estate in Clare and vineyards in the Adelaide Hills – both positioned high on hills to minimise the risk of frost. Gewürztraminer is the first grape taken each season as the vines go through bud burst early.

The 2008 vintage displays intense, lifted aromas of rosewater, gooseberries and subtle spice characters. The palate is dry with flavours of Turkish delight, lemon and gooseberry with a crisp clean finish.

Mitchell Taylor is delighted with the first win for the new vintage whites which have only just left the winery in the last few weeks, commenting: “We’re thrilled to receive recognition for this great traditional variety. We decided to include Gewürztraminer in our wine portfolio over ten years ago. It seemed an obvious choice for us as the Clare Valley is the perfect home for this variety, and we have been proud of it’s quality since our first release in 1998.”
