Taylors Celebrates 40 years

This year at Taylors Wines in the Clare Valley, South Australia, we are proudly celebrating our 40th anniversary.  We first began planting the vineyards on our estate during the 1969/1970 growing season.  The first vine, a Cabernet Sauvignon variety, was planted by the former Minister of Lands, (the late) Mr P. H Quirke.

Construction then began on a winery and cellars in 1972 and the facility was completed in time for the first vintage in 1973.

The soon to be completed winery was described by the press in 1972 as “…a modern winery which will be a landmark in the district.  The front wall will be more than 320 feet long…The winery stands atop a hill giving a magnificent view of the vineyards and the large drip feed irrigation dam, which stand astride the Wakefield River.  The township of Auburn can be seen in the distance...”

Designed in collaboration with A.J Bowley & Son of Clare, the unique building façade became synonymous with Taylors wines when we first used an image of it to decorate the front label of our 1973 Cabernet and Hermitage (Shiraz), our first vintage release.

Over the last 40 years, Taylors Wines has grown from strength to strength.  The estate has developed from 178 hectares planted to only cabernet and shiraz to now almost 600 hectares planted to 12 different varieties of red and white grapevines.

From our first vintage release that won gold medals at every national wine show, including the prestigious Montgomery Trophy, to the present day accumulated total of over 2,000 awards, our commitment to crafting fine Australian wines has never wavered.

So, in 2009, I invite you to charge your glass with your favourite drop of Taylors wine and join us in celebrating this wonderful journey of 40 years.
