More Information
Region Coonawarra
Colour At release, the wine is a dark ruby red with a bright red hue.
Nose The wine displays a distinctive regional expression of choc-mint along with cool climate aromas of violets, spice and cedar tobacco notes from French oak maturation.
Palate Deliciously haunting flavours of blackcurrant, mint and dark chocolate persist around a finely tuned tannin structure and a thoroughly enjoyable long and persistent finish.
Vintage Conditions The Coonawarra region enjoyed good winter rains leading into the growing season for vintage 2019 which served to mitigate high temperatures and seasonal weather conditions. Typically cool nights created by the Southern Ocean created optimal ripening conditions which allowed for full flavour development. The Cabernets from the vintage are deep and rich in colour with great varietal definition and soft ripe tannins.
Oak Maturation Following extended skin contact over a four week period, the wine was then matured in high quality, tight grained French oak barrels for 6 months before being bottled.
Cellaring Notes Crafted for immediate enjoyment but will cellar over a long term under ideal conditions.

A stylish, well made, deep crimson wine with lovely fresh varietal fruit characters of cassis and mint. Fleshy and flavoursome in the mouth with vibrant tannins.

Deep red/purple colour, bright and youthful, the bouquet is the same, with intense peppermint leading the way. The palate is likewise bright and fresh, intense and borderline firm, the tannins ripe and appealing and just adding the requisite cabernet backbone. A very smart cabernet of the minty style, finely-tuned and precise all along the palate, with line and length. A Coonawarra cabernet cast in the 'Peppermint Pattie' mould.

It’s certainly a proudly regional style. You’ve got to like a bit of mint on nose and palate, but there’s an expanse of dark berry fruit and firm long tannins. It’s like a classic Wynns Cabernet, albeit a ripe year version. If there was a wine to impress your big red loving uncle, this is it.

...The Masterstroke is quite a classically styled cabernet rather than the bigger, riper, crowd pleasing style that you might expect. Deeply coloured, there are pretty leafy perfumes supported by cedar, violets and blackcurrant fruits. It’s then more mid-weight than full-bodied; a core of dark fruits are supported by juicy acidity and sinewy tannins that support a lingering finish. It’s crisp and balanced so has some aging potential but is probably best on the young side at its brightest and freshest.

The 2019 Coonawarra is a top wine: refined and elegant in style, it is very aromatic, full bodied, and supple, with intense and complex flavour (black currant, blackberry, tobacco, eucalyptus mint, cherry, toast, oak, herbs), very fine balance, and a long, harmonious finish. First rate wine, with the capability of ageing for 5-10+ more years. Aged 6 months in French oak barrels.
