More Information
Region McLaren Vale
Colour At release, the wine is a deep purple, red.
Nose The wine displays enticing layers of red plum and black cherry and then mocha coffee and subtle vanilla and spice.
Palate The wine has a mouth filling lusciousness, densely packed with generous plum and dark cherry fruit flavours along with subtle floral violet characters and a smack of vanilla underlying the opulent oak expression.
Vintage Conditions In McLaren Vale, the conditions leading up to vintage 2019 were dry. These conditions, in combination with a hail event in November and hot weather in January and February resulted in both an overall reduction in harvest yields along with a corresponding increase in fruit flavour profile intensity.
Oak Maturation The wine was matured in a combination of new and older American oak barrels for a period of 6 months before being bottled.
Cellaring Notes Crafted for immediate enjoyment but will cellar over a long term under ideal conditions.

For the Masterstroke series fruit has been sourced from Coonawarra (Cabernet Sauvignon), McLaren Vale (Shiraz) and then back to their traditional Clare Valley home for the classic Australian Cabernet Shiraz Blend. 2019 was a hot and dry vintage in McLaren Vale which in this wine has created a robust and chewy red. Deeply coloured, it shows brooding blackberry and blueberry fruits with some rocky and white pepper complexity topped by toasted coconut oak. That is followed by a dense and spicy palate with sweet fruits showing underlying power that continues through to a good finish with drying tannins. It is quite a complex McLaren Vale style that will drink well over the medium term.

Deep, dark and purple in the glass, quite opaque. Dark fruit aromas, plum, blackberry, dried herbs, mocha and spice, a whiff of eucalyptus. Dark and firm flavours, coffee grounds and dark chocolate. Plenty of drying grippy tannins shape the structure and mouth-feel. Impressive length.

The Mclaren Vale Shiraz is also outstanding: fleshy in texture, full bodied, well balanced, and richly flavoured (blackberry, cassis, black licorice, cedar, oak); a very young wine with years of development ahead. Great value; likely at its best after 2025. Aged 6 months in American iak barrels, partly new.
