Colour At release, the wine is an intense red colour with a vibrant purple hue to the edge.
Nose The wine has an enticing, lifted aroma of ripe blackcurrants, choc mint, subtle spice and a hint of dried tomato leaf. The overall nose character is one of richness and elegance.
Palate On the palate it is a very luscious, rich wine with ripe blackcurrant characters, along with hints of crushed violet petals and subtle oak characters of cedar and fresh tobacco. There is an understated power to the wine, with layers of complexity building across the palate and then finishing elegantly with long, fine tannins. It is a generous, mouth filling wine yet retains poise and the elegance of great Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vintage Conditions The growing season for vintage 2018 was characterised as warm and dry although we avoided any major heatwaves during vintage which can be very damaging and so to that end, vintage was relatively calm and controlled. Overall, our winemaking team are very excited about the quality of the wines from this vintage. In terms of the white varieties, these wines are highly aromatic with very pure and distinct varietal characters.
Oak Maturation The wine was allowed a period of extended skin contact before being pressed and transferred to French oak barrels to complete the secondary malolactic fermentation. Once MLF was completed, the wine was racked off lees, fined and then then transferred back to fine-grained French oak barrels (33% new, 66% 2 – 3 year old) for a period of 18 months oak maturation.
Cellaring Notes Crafted for immediate enjoyment but will cellar over a long term under ideal conditions.

    The dark, intense 2018 St. Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon is barrel fermented in new oak. This is less about floral and high notes than the Estate Cabernet, instead focusing on the deep bass notes of cassis and coffee, with hints of dark chocolate and black olives. Full-bodied and intense, it's plush and velvety, with a long finish.

    A supple wine that is rich and complex in flavour (black currant, cassis, toast, oak, tobacco, herbs), well balanced, and long and persistent on the finish. Very fine quality and value; warrants 3-5 more years of aging. Afed 18 months in French oak barrels, partly new.
