Shiraz 2009

Enormously flavoursome with rich fruit characters of black cherry, plum and ripe berries. American oak adds nuances of vanilla, cigar box, coffee and toast.

Previous Vintages 2006
Region Clare Valley
Colour At release, the wine has a developing brick red colour with a deep crimson heart.
Nose The wine has a brooding, savoury complex yet thoroughly enticing aroma. Mouth-watering wafts of chocolate, mocha, toffee and cream intertwine with plum, aniseed and rich berry fruit.
Palate The palate is a mouthful of round completeness. The fruit flavours and oak weight are in absolute balance bringing harmony and grace to the palate from start to finish. This is a generous yet elegant wine that showcases Clare Valley Shiraz at its best.
Vintage Conditions Vintage 2009 was near on perfect in the Clare Valley. It was characterized by optimal growing conditions and soil moisture levels near full capacity due to the welcome winter rains. Mild weather continued during December and January, gradually warming to the point where we experienced a severe heat-wave. Thankfully the vines had not yet begun veraison, so in the heat, they simply shut down for a few days. Strong canopies protected the fruit and mature leaves withstood the high temperatures. Fortunately, when the heat subsided the region experienced perfect ripening weather with mild days and cool nights. The wines from vintage 2009 are exceptionally well balanced; showing rich, varietal fruit flavours.
Oak Maturation A percentage of the wine was barrel fermented and the final blend was matured in a mixture of fine-grained French and water-bent American oak barrels for 12 months prior to filtering and bottling.
Cellaring Notes Crafted for immediate enjoyment but will cellar over a long term under ideal conditions.

An extremely supple rendering of Shiraz probably best enjoyed over the next couple of years, this wine of¬fers a complex blend of the savory and fruity. Mo-cha, tar and roasted meat notes mingle with mo¬lasses, plums and raspberries before fading on the finish.

An excellent soft rounded and well balanced commercial style that has a ripe tarry/jammy nose and seamlessly balanced palate of dark fruits, oak, acid and tannins.

Massive oak-driven wine. "But it's great oak," said one judge. Prune-like fruit and massive tannins.

Earth, complex scents of tar, pepper, and anise, and a load of depth in the mouth. A great example of a cool climate Aussie red that is less tannic and more flavorful than many, and a bet to age with moderate 3.55 pH.

Bedecked with so many gold metals, national and international judges obviously like this fruit-sweet, essency and vanilla-oaky style of shiraz more than I do. While rich and plush, it is well-balanced and many readers will love it, especially with a nicely charred bit of beef.
