Colour At release, the wine has a concentrated ruby red colour with a dark mahogany hue to the edge.
Nose On the nose, the wine is complex and enticing with red berry fruits, dark chocolate, dusty spice, and hints of charcuterie, cigar box and roasted coffee.
Vintage Conditions In the Clare Valley, rainfall was below average for the season leading up to vintage 2016 but it was not the amount that had the biggest impact; it was the timing. Mother Nature saw fit to dole out just the right amount of water at just the right time for maximum positive impact. In fact, this was just one of the factors at play when it comes to the vintage being lauded as one of the greats. Firstly, the vines were stress free heading into the winter period, creating the potential for a superior crop. Secondly, conditions were ideal during flowering and then lastly, the threat of frost did not eventuate. All these conditions combined to create what can be described as the perfect vintage.
Oak Maturation A percentage of the wine was barrel fermented and the final blend was matured in high quality, water-bent American oak barrels for 20 months prior to filtering and bottling.
Cellaring Notes Crafted for immediate enjoyment but will cellar over a long term under ideal conditions.

    Based on its dark, dense appearance alone, I was all buckled up for a wild ride with this wine, but what results is actually an extremely civilized experience at a dizzyingly high level of quality. The intense berry fruit aromas and flavors are edged with accents of spices, toast, eucalyptus and wild thyme…and all of these sensory signals remain balanced and evident across the entirely of the sensory experience provided by the wine, including an extremely long finish. There’s little doubt that a high proportion of the juice here was from low yielding old vines, and based on that as well as the wine’s completely compelling performance, this is actually a very strong value even at $80. A Platinum Award winner at the 2019 San Diego International Wine and Spirits Challenge.

    Stylistically similar to the Jaraman Shiraz but with the volume turned up a notch or two. Impressively concentrated shiraz with intense and ripe cassis, dark berry, eucalypt, spice and even a suggestion of floral and violet supported by great acidity that gives the wine energy. A long-distance runner.

    Always a solid performer, the St. Andrews in this vintage is rather tight at present, but all the expected elements are in place, and time or a large decanter will work magic on the blackberry, blueberry, brown spice and menthol. Give it a half day in the decanter near term, or age long term. Classy Shiraz!

    Lots of effort has gone into this. Fruit fermented in headless new American barrels that are hand-plunged plus extended maceration to get every bit of extract. The wine is then pressed back to the same vessels for maturation for 20 months. Needless to say, oak is a feature. Vanilla, spice and pomade interwoven with glossy black fruit, licorice straps and plums. Dense, fruit sweet, but with the expected savoury dry finish the oak brings.

    Cellar Selection. This is a big young wine but in reflection of the relatively cool climes of Clare Valley, it offers up a little more freshness than its Barossa counterparts. A spicy nose of ground black pepper and earthy dried herbs mingles with mocha, plums, raspberries and olives. The fruit is more prominent on the palate, fleshy and ripe and framed by tight fine-grained tannins. Drink 2021–2029. Seaview Imports.

    Both wines have screw cap closures, and both are excellent Clare Valley wines. The Shiraz is a full bodied, complex wine that is fleshy in texture, richly flavored (boysenberry, cassis, black licorice, blueberry jam, cedar, oak), balanced, and very long and lingering on the finish. Aged 18 months in American oak barrels. Delicious; can be aged further.

    Lastly, 2016 St Andrews Shiraz which is 100% barrel-fermented in tight grain Ozark / Shenandoah oak. This American oak stands back from the wine and allows it to build power and also intensity. Lifted, creamy, sturdy and profound, this is yet another superb wine from this irrepressible operator.

    Intense nose of wood shavings, spices, vanilla,raspberry and berryfruit. Smoke and spices take the lead on the powerfully, sweet-fruited palate, with blackberry, dark berry and minty hints evolving with aeration. This comes across as lush and supple before tannins and acidity kick in.

    Taylors Wines St. Andrews Shiraz 2016, Clare Valley, Australia, is 100 percent syrah grapes, aged 20 months in American oak barrels. The color — if that’s the word — is opaque black-purple with a glowing magenta rim; the aromas draw you in with pertinent notes of lavender, licorice and graphite, spice-drenched blackberries and blueberries, and inflections of iodine, mint and flint; all very ripe and intensely perfumed but not overdone. Silky tannins and lip-smacking acidity are gently but firmly framed by oak, an element that interferes not a whit with the wine’s essential juicy black fruit flavors. 14.5 percent alcohol. Now through 2024 to ’26. Excellent.
