Colour At release, the wine has a concentrated ruby red colour with a dark purple hue to the edge.
Nose The wine has concentrated layers of violets, liquorice, chocolate, cinnamon, coffee, mocha and creamy vanillin aromas. Very rich and reminiscent of liquor cherries in rum & raisin ice cream.
Palate The wine is rich and complex with layers of flavour and a creamy, mouth filling texture. Dark berry fruits combine with mocha and vanilla spice flavours from high quality oak. The fruit and oak weight create a multidimensional palate balanced by good zesty acidity bringing freshness and great length of flavour. This is a very elegant wine with textural complexity and long, persistent flavours.
Vintage Conditions The growing season was characterised as warm and dry for vintage 2018, the only year in recent times warmer was 2016, which produced some excellent, award-winning wines. One of the great things about this vintage, though, was that we avoided any major heatwaves during vintage which can be very damaging and so to that end, vintage was relatively calm and controlled. Overall, our winemaking team are very excited about the quality of the wines from this vintage. In terms of the red varieties, these wines have deep colours and distinct varietal characters.
Oak Maturation All of the fruit for this wine was fermented in headless American oak barrels and left to soak on skins for 2 weeks. Post fermentation, the wine was matured for 18 months in the same high quality water-bent American oak barrels.
Cellaring Notes Crafted for immediate enjoyment but will cellar over a long term under ideal conditions.

With 2018 a strong vintage down under, this wine wears it well. Plush yet high-toned currant and plum-fruit characteristics are followed by a sanguine note—like iodine—along with cedar, mint, pencil lead and a seaweed, umami-like nuance. The mouthfeel is distinctive: tannins like sandpaper but the fruit silky and tangy. There's power here but drinkability too. Cellar for several years for added complexity or crack open now with a roast lamb or similarly comforting cold-weather cuisine.

I tasted a representative blend of the 2018 St. Andrews Shiraz that was assembled out of several barrels, and it's even more promising than the 2017. It's brighter and fresher on the nose, with bigger and redder fruit notes. It's also full-bodied and plush, loaded with cherries and raspberries, all on a plush cushion of creamy, vanilla-laden oak.

The 2018 Shiraz is complex and Bordeaux-like in style. It is supple in texture, full bodied, intensely flavoured, medium rich, and very long on the palate, with well integrated fruit and oak components. It tastes of blackberry, black olive, toast, tobacco, vanilla, loganberry, and red licorice. Delicious wine, in a somewhat understated style. Warrants aging. Aged 18 months in American oak barrels.
