...2014 The Legacy consists of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon (selected from The Visionary stocks), plus 26 other components—mainly Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The result is more vibrant, with the fruit refreshed and playing a more central role in this rich, full-bodied effort. Cassis leads the way, accented by lovely baking spices, vanilla and even a hint of licorice on the long, plush finish.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Taylor family, in May 2019 the winery is releasing its most ambitious and exciting wine to date. Inspired by the great Mouton-Rothschilds and Margaux of old, which in turn led to the family Taylor selling their restaurants and hotels in Sydney and buying land in Clare to make wine it was, perhaps, inevitable that when a big anniversary came around they might release an icon Cabernet as opposed to a Shiraz! I was immensely privileged to taste this wine back in March and it is without doubt one of the most awe-inspiring wines I have ever experienced. Winemaker Adam Eggins let me into some of the secrets behind its production and there is no project on which the winemaker and the Taylor family have worked so tirelessly in the last half century... The Legacy is made in a limited quantity (1080 bottles), it being a ruthlessly culled barrel selection of the finest fruit fermented in the finest oak in the world, according to Adam. Each bottle is packaged in a beautiful case within which is a three-pronged sculpture representing each of the three generations of the family. Both Merlot and Cabernet Franc are present in the wine and this is because they added even more complexity to the whole. The flavour is like nothing I have ever tasted before, it certainly has a Clare signature but is not an overtly Australian wine. It has completeness, a word Adam uses a lot, suggesting that he has gone to pains to give... The Legacy the most expansive and all-encompassing flavour that he can create. This staggeringly serious wine spent a full 36 months in a cool, temperature controlled cellar in order that all of the oak was perfectly assimilated with the fruit. Magnificent and also delicate and responsive to the touch, this is a game-changer and I am so pleased that Cabernet Sauvignon was the inspiration and now is the legacy for this incredible winery and its talented team.

This is a departure for the Taylor family cabernet, a brilliant wine which doesn't taste particularly like Clare. (It has some Coonawarra cabernet franc and merlot in it). There are herb and peppermint aromas and some crushed leafy and raspberry high notes that remind of cabernet franc. Violet and cassis aromas. A hint of tamarillo or tomato bush, too. Three years in new French barriques has barely marked the wine. The palate is where it comes into its own, with tremendous intensity and tightly-focused flavour, wonderful purity and extraordinarily fine, but very abundant, tannins. The harmony and length are impeccable. The oak is seamless and tannins are very present but unobtrusive. A great wine and possibly the best cabernet yet...
