Colour At release, the wine is a deep, dark garnet colour with a subtle purple hue to the edge.
Nose Blackcurrants, dark plum, cassis, mocha, cedar, cigar box & subtle choc mint.
Palate Well-balanced with rich black fruit characters, interweaving harmoniously with subtle coffee & chocolate. The wine has an understated authority, with layers of complexity building across the palate and finishing gracefully with long, fine tannins. It is a generous wine yet retains both poise & elegance.
Vintage Conditions Growing conditions leading up to vintage 2012 were relatively mild, with regular spring rains promoting excellent vine canopy growth. Budburst was earlier than average, and this early start flowed through until harvest time 1 to 2 weeks earlier than in a typical year. Harvest conditions were excellent with only one substantial rain event occurring during harvest. Whilst it happened after most white varieties were picked, it had a positive effect on the red varieties, appearing to freshen them up, particularly the dry-grown blocks. Ideal ripening and flavour development conditions then persisted to the end of the harvesting period. Overall, whilst yields were lower than average, the winemakers reported quality to be outstanding with intense colour and excellent flavour development.
Oak Maturation Post MLF, the wine was transferred to fine-grained French oak barrels - 60 % in new oak & the balance in 1 year old barrels, selected for their subtle savoury characters. After 13 months a barrel selection assessment identified 'exceptional' parcels to return to barrel for another 12 months prior to bottling.
Cellaring Notes Immediately approachable but will cellar well in ideal conditions for up to 20 years from vintage date.

Labelled as an “exceptional parcel” release, the grapes that have made their way into this are stars, releasing deep, deep black berry and cool mint aromas that’ll have your nose unable to leave the glass. All that delicious black fruit stays right with you, intricately woven with fine oak elements in a beautifully structured and assuredly balanced wine, immensely drinkable now and for years to come. Elite, fine wine at its most glorious.

Ahh Clare Cabernet, you do ring my bell (sometimes). Eucalypt. Cedar. Choc mint. More mint. More chocolate. More fruit. The mint integrates in time though, the chocolate oak is woven through the palate and the beauty is the length - it's a seriously long, with a flooding firmness that always marks out the best Clare reds (like Wendouree). This should live for 30 years, and though the price is steep ($200 when it's released later in the year apparently) it will be a very safe drinking investment. Very serious and even surprisingly drinkable, despite the ripping tannins.

This is a well-structured, medium-weight Clare cabernet. It's destined to cellar well. It tastes of black olives, mint and leathery blackberry. Creamy oak is well integrated but flashily applied. It's firm and sure; it will hold and mature over a couple of decades as a minimum.

Bright, powerful and deep leafy cassis and blackberry fruits with sweet new French oak in tow. A very deep, brooding and masculine style in the mouth with lush fruit of significant power, chewy tannins plus a long and mouth filling finish.

Medium purple color. Aromatically slugging, with deep red and black currants and tart plums, but with air more reserved and elegant notes come out, tobacco, eucalyptus, mint, sweet violets, pickle, white pepper. Seriously complex sniffing. On the palate, this shows a firm tannic structure, some medium acid. Tart black currants and dark plums, the fruit has crunchy skins but lots of ooze on the inside. Complex secondary notes of tar, charcoal, wet forest, mint, white pepper, clove, roasted chestnut and dark roast coffee. Crazy complex but the elements unravel beautifully on the palate. The oak signature is written in thick pen, but it has enough other elements going for it. A burly wine that will improve for ten years and hold for longer, but it’s quite a thing to taste the power right now.

Green floral spice and oak on the nose; smooth and lush with sweet, ripe fruit and spice; supple, rich and long.

(fermented and aged for 24 months in one-third new French oak barrels): Bright purple. Deep smoke- and spice-accented dark berry, cherry and vanilla scents show excellent clarity and vivacity. Juicy, seamless and focused on the palate, offering intense blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors lifted and braced by a jolt of minerality. Shows wonderful balance and precision, with pure black and blue fruit flavors hanging on tenaciously on the finish. With a pH of 3.57 and 14.1% alcohol, this wine is analytically similar to many classic Medoc wines.

    91/100 Outstanding
An appealing roasted red pepper note adds dimension to the cherry and plum flavors, with a savory edge and spicy tobacco accents. Juicy and velvety on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2030.

Screw cap. Superb: fleshy, very concentrated in flavor, and full bodied, this is a fairly powerful, young wine that is very long on the palate, and tannic and persistent on the finish, tasting of cassis, eucalyptus mint, vanilla, tobacco, black cherry, and blackberry. Terrific. Warrants aging. Produced from the best fruit from the family's Auburn estate. Aged 26 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. 14% [2019-2028]

This is crammed with mint and cassis the nose, with much of the same on the palate. Well balanced fruit and oak with gripping tannins. An impressive monster red that will benefit with time in bottle.

Oh what a shame to have consumed this masterpiece so young. The wine is brilliant, it’s tightly wrapped core of fruit and other delightful flavors will unfold beautifully given time. A must have for your bucket list of ‘Wines to drink before I die!’ A rare treat.
