At release, the wine colour is a very pale yellow with tinges of green to the edge.
The nose offers elegant green melon with subtle fresh honey and a hint of nuttiness.
The palate displays enjoyable fresh stone fruit flavours with overtones of green melon and hints of spice. This is a fresh and vibrant wine that pairs well with lighter style Mediterranean cuisine, especially white meats and seafood.
The aim is to craft a wine that replicates as close as possible, the classic Italian style that is approachable and food-friendly. The fruit for this wine was sourced from a neighbouring grower partner in the Clare Valley, South Australia. After harvesting in the cool of the night to protect the delicate flavours, the fruit was gently batch pressed and drained straight way to avoid phenolic pickup. Only free run juice was used with the pressings kept separate. The juice was then fermented in stainless steel at a cool 14 to 16 degrees Celsius. Post fermentation, the wine underwent a short period of lees stirring to increase mouthfeel. After minimal fining and filtration, the wine was bottled in May 2016.
Fiano (pronounced ‘fee-ah-noh’) is a white Italian wine grape variety that is grown primarily in the Campania region of southern Italy and on the island of Sicily. In Campania, this fairly intensely flavoured white wine grape is particularly noted around Avellino where the DOCG (Denominazione di origine controllata e Garantita) wine of Fiano di Avellino is produced. The grape has a long history in the Campanian region and is believed to have been the grape behind the ancient Roman wine Apianum. Fiano can produce an age worthy wine that. In its youth, Fiano has a floral aroma and is intensely flavoured with notes of honey and spice. The variety also has the potential to improve with bottle age for several years after the vintage date, increasing in palate weight and developing nuttier, hazelnut and spicy characters. The fruit for this particular parcel was sourced from a grower partner situated in the Clare Valley and the project undertaken by the winemakers was to investigate what is considered in Australia to be an alternative variety. The wine was subsequently released under the TWP label exclusively for cellar door.
