Ruby red with purple hues on release.
Aromas of mulberries and creamy cinnamon on the nose giving way to hints of star anise and subtle yet underlying tobacco leaf.
Flavours of fresh red berries and crème brûlée underpinned by subtle chocolate nuances with an elegant and silky structure defined by fine well balanced tannins.
In assembling the final blend for bottling, our winemakers were searching for a finished wine in which the contribution of each assembled part made greater the whole yet which presented a degree of refinement and seamlessness in a blended varietal wine that is so often elusive. The final blend represents 49% Grenache, 38% Shiraz and 13% Mataro and was bottled in June 2011.
After careful harvesting, 50% of the Grenache was fermented in small open fermenters in 800kg individual parcels. The balance was fermented in stainless steel cool fermenters for a period of seven days to maximise the capture of the delicate red currant and red berry fruit characteristics. The Shiraz and Mataro components were entirely fermented in small static stainless steel fermenters for a period of five days. After primary fermentation was complete they were then put through malolactic fermentation in tank prior to being racked and sent to barrels.
Our winemakers selected two parcels of Grenache for harvesting from vineyards located in the Watervale sub-region of the Clare Valley. The fruit from these low-cropping bush vines, first planted in the 1950’s, was selected for its fragrant spicy characteristics, intense red berry flavour and elegant yet supportive natural tannin structure. For the Shiraz component two specific parcels of Shiraz were selected. The first parcel was sourced from the S50 Block on the Taylor family Estate which is an old contour planted block first established in the early 1970’s. The second parcel was sourced from a nearby vineyard also located within the Auburn subregion of the Clare Valley. The Shiraz parcels were selected for their ability to produce fresh, red berry fruit flavours that would marry well yet not overpower the natural expression of the Grenache. The parcel of Mataro* was actually selected post-vintage for its earthiness and structure with the ability to bring additional finished complexity to the final wine. *Mataro is also known by its synonyms Mouvèdre and Monastrell.
