At release, the wine colour is medium purple colour with red tinges.
The nose offers seductive dark berry fruits with black cherry and subtle chocolate.
The palate displays rich dark cherry and blackberry flavours supported by a bold tannin structure and excellent length of flavour. This is a voluptuous style wine that pairs well with rustic style Mediterranean food.
The aim is to craft a wine that replicates as close as possible, the classic Italian style that is approachable and food-friendly. The fruit for this wine was sourced from a grower partner specialising in Italian varietals situated in McLaren Vale, South Australia. After harvesting, and prior to primary fermentation, the fruit was cold soaked to extract extra fruit flavours. The fruit was then fermented on skins at around 25 to 28 degrees Celsius in a static stainless steel vessel with the must pumped over twice daily to aid colour and tannin extraction. Once fermentation was completed, the wine was racked to another vessel and then underwent secondary malolactic fermentation. Post MLF, the wine was transferred to 2 year old French oak barrels for a short period of maturation, being careful not to overpower the true varietal characters. After minimal fining and filtration, the wine was bottled in May 2017.
Nero d'Avola (pronounced ‘neeroh-dah-volla’) means "Black of Avola" in Italian and is considered the most important red wine grape in Sicily and also one of Italy's most important indigenous varieties. Nero (‘black’ in Italian) refers to the colour of the grapes whilst d'Avola refers to the town and region of Avola in the south-eastern part of Sicily where this variety is grown. The wines crafted in this region are often compared to New World Shirazes, with sweet tannins and plum or peppery flavours. It also contributes to Marsala blends. The variety can be easily influenced by winemaking practices to create a soft fruity style or a voluptuous mid to full bodied wine. The fruit for this particular parcel was sourced from a grower partner situated in McLaren Vale and the project undertaken by the winemakers was to investigate what is considered in Australia to be an alternative variety. The wine was subsequently released under the TWP label exclusively for cellar door.
