Some handy depth here on the nose and palate with ripe, darker-fleshed plums and blueberries, served up on a soft, supple bed of tannin. Drink now. Screw cap.

The Clare, as it is called by the locals, is most famous for its classically proportioned Shiraz, but beyond that most everything else from the Clare is top-notch. The 2017 Merlot is soft and supple, shows a distinct floral note, and aromas of plum and black cherry. And it’s a steal at this price.

Light purple color. Bright but juicy on the nose with sweet raspberries, red and black cherries, along with some violet petals, cola and coffee. Full but smooth with soft tannins and medium acidity. Juicy black cherries, tangy plums, raspberries, the fruit is juicy but fresh and mixed in with some coffee, violets and coffee. Smooth, easy-drinking, accessible, but well-made and vibrant. Aged in a mix of French and American oak, 10% new.

A beautifully ripe, plush merlot with a rounded mid-palate and very soft tannins. Bright plum and redcurrant flavours. An easy-drinking wine.

This Clare Valley Merlot starts somewhat reductively, the red and black berries and vanillin oak notes all a little masked. The palate feels a bit watery but is sweet fruited with gentle granular tannins. A synthetic quality creeps in, lingering to the finish, which feels a little bitter. Seaview Imports.

Cedary, herbal notes of berry and currant have a slight candied edge. Drink now. 1,000 cases imported.

Pretty well cast in the friendly, cuddly camp of Merlot. Not meaning to offend or unnerve. Fruitcake spice and dark choc/vanilla tinged oak over sweet fruits of the forest, damp pouch tobacco and wet earth. Medium bodied. Velvety easy tannins make for a smooth ride of ripe dark berries. Clare Valley savoury/herby notes keep this interesting.
