St. Andrews

Shiraz 2013

Enormously flavoursome with rich fruit characters of black cherry, plum and ripe berries. American oak adds nuances of vanilla, cigar box, coffee and toast.

Region Clare Valley
Colour At release, the wine has a deep red colour with a purple hue to the edge.
Nose The wine has a complex and enticing nose showing dark berry fruit along with juicy black plum, spice, cedar and hints of chocolate and roasted coffee.
Vintage Conditions In the Clare Valley, growing conditions leading up to vintage 2013 could best be described as benign, apart from a frost event of mid-October which impacted several blocks on our estate vineyards. There were very few significant rainfall events over the growing period with the season being described overall as dry. The first week of December saw a 30mm down pour which was most definitely a season changer. Without the rain event, the overall yields from 2013 would have been very low. Harvest conditions were excellent with the first white varieties picked in early February. Our winemakers report that quality is outstanding across all varieties, with excellent acid balance and flavour development displayed in the resultant wines.
Oak Maturation A percentage of the wine was barrel fermented and the final blend was matured in high quality, water-bent American oak barrels for 20 months prior to filtering and bottling.
Cellaring Notes Crafted for immediate enjoyment but will cellar over a long term under ideal conditions.

    Very Good +
Very dark ruby color; black and red raspberries and currants threaded by mint and iodine, graphite and a rooty-branchy-loamy element; notes of tobacco and cedar emerge; quite flavorful, tasty ripe and slightly spicy berries, but plenty of acidity for liveliness and dusty, flint-laced tannins for structure. Now through 2020 to 2023.

The Taylor family selected Clare Valley for its Caber¬net affinity, but this Shiraz is a knockout. Yes, it’s oaky—full of menthol, vanilla and toasted coco¬nut—but there’s just enough black cherry and plum fruit to support the wood. It’s a plush, full-bodied wine with immense appeal, for drinking now–2025. Editors’ Choice.

Opaque crimson/black hue. The heady nose is full of mashed blackberries and black plums laced with black pepper, cedar, and roast coffee aromas. Full and mouth-coating, the distinctive Clare Valley fruit settles down to a more refined palate presence than might be found in the Barossa to the south. Notes of fresh black licorice accent the flavors of the black, fleshy fruits. This is a complete wine, nicely balanced, with decades of pleasure still ahead. Utterly delicious – perhaps the best vintage of St. Andrews ever.

Elegant, powerful shiraz with appealing sweet dark berry, raspberry, vanilla, dried fruits, coffee and chocolate flavours. Soft, ripe tannins add structure and balance opulent fruit sweetness to give a pleasantly drying finish. A seriously good shiraz that can be appreciated now or cellared with confidence.

Deep, rich red colour with a tinge of purple. The bouquet shows notable coconut and vanilla American oak, but also great richness of ripe chocolaty flavour. Smoky, burnt toasty oak character aplenty on nose and palate, adding a hint of bitterness. Fruitcake, bitter chocolate elements are added to the ample black fruits. Soft, abundant tannins persist on the aftertaste. A very tasty wine.

Bright deep ruby. Big and bold with blackberry, chocolate, eucalypt, a touch of raisin and peppery fruits plus heavy toast oak. In the mouth it is dry, full and chewy with slightly rustic tannins balanced by rich fruit and needs time to flesh out.

Offers intoxicating aromatics, with toasty cigar box, clove and sandalwood notes, pepper highlights and fresh earth–accented flavors of black cherry. A spicy detail extends through the long finish, with polished tannins. Drink now through 2028.

Jammy and ripe in a good way, delivering oodles of red fruit flavour and sweetly spiced oak character too. Finely layered tannic fuzz, excellent persistence. Typifies the big, bold Australian style while showing there can be structure and balance too. (RH)14.3% Drink 2018-2028
