FROM PUBLICANS TO WINEMAKERS

The Hotelier

Originally a hotelier, Bill Taylor embarked on a journey to source great wines for his guests. This eventually lead to the Taylor family establishing their own Clare Valley winery in 1969, with a vision to craft wines that would rival the world's best.

Bill Taylor Senior had worked hard to build a collection of very successful hotels in Sydney.  His sons John and Bill worked side by side with him.  It was in the 1960’s that the Taylor family’s long-standing association with the Clare Valley wine region began when they partnered with the local, regional Winemaking Co-operative to bottle and distribute their own wines through their hotels.

Of course, being in the hospitality industry exposed them to some great wines.  The sons were fans of the fine wines of Europe, particularly Bordeaux and Bill Taylor believed that wines of the same calibre could be crafted in Australia.   Ultimately, it was this belief and a pursuit of his vision to craft wines to rival the best out of Europe that led them to sell the hotels and start the new family business of winemaking.
