Vintage Conditions In the growing season leading up to vintage 2019, the Clare Valley experienced quite challenging conditions with winter rainfall well under the long term averages and then periods of frost and hail delivered less than ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set. As we progressed into the January ripening period, the challenges continued with extensive periods of hot weather. Thankfully in February the conditions moderated, reflecting a more Mediterranean climate with daytime temperatures far more ideal for ripening. Our winemaking team report that whilst yields are down, good quality exists amongst both the red and white varieties from this vintage.

Clare Valley Riesling comes in all shapes and sizes. There are plenty of winemakers that go for lean and mean, acid-driven styles – fantastic young when accompanying dishes that need a sharp bite of acidity, such as fish and chips, or for refreshment on a hot day. But they can be hard work – like sucking on an unripe lime. This wine is at the other end of the spectrum. It is full-throttle and proudly wears on its sleeve a warm and dry Clare Valley summer. Sure it has plenty of citrus fruit aromas, as all good riesling should, which is accented by some exotic floral blossom and apricot thrown in the mix. It’s then dry and crisp but also rounded and generous with rich fruit and fine balance that drive a long mouth-filling finish. It is big riesling style, and a little bit unusual for the Clare Valley but I like it a lot, and reckon it would be at its best matched with a roast vegetable tart.

There are 1,000 cases of the excellent 2019 St Andrews Riesling, which boasts fabulous aromas of limes and green peaches. More concentrated and intense than the Estate Riesling, it's medium-bodied, potent and linear in style, finishing with mouthwatering acids. Depending how mature you like this style of Riesling, drink it anytime over the next decade or so.

Yellow straw color. Attractive, inviting aromas and flavors of wet stone, yuzu marmalade, pickled ginger, honey, and geranium with a satiny, vibrant, bone-dry light body and a sleek, elegant, long finish manifesting notes of orange zest, hints of anise, and coriander seed with no oak flavor. A fantastic Riesling with beautifully integrated flavors, singing floral high notes and great ageability.

It’s an elegant, gently developed riesling with dry lime and cider apple flavours floating amiably through the palate. There’s a gentle spritz to the palate, very gentle, and a slight earthen note too. All in all it works well.

Fermented cool to preserve fruit and freshness, this is archetypal. A light mid-weight. Dry. Very. Lemon sherbet, Granny Smith apple and quince notes careen along talcy acid rails, punctuated with a riff of tonic and quinine bitterness at the tail.

Pale lemon colour. A nose of broken chalk and homestyle lemonade. The palate is all lemon sherbet and chalk. Ultra-tight and focused. Goes long in a very narrow beam. Time should help it loosen and broaden its shoulders.
