Region Clare Valley 56% / Coonawarra 44%
Colour At release, the wine has a deep ruby red colour to the centre with a youthful purple hue to the edges.
Nose There are lifted aromas of dark blackcurrant fruit along with subtle choc-mint and a hint of eucalypt.
Palate On the palate, this is a rich, full-bodied wine with intense flavours of cassis and blackberry fruit along with attractive oak characters of cigar box and tobacco leaf. Overall, the wine is well balanced with complex, well-integrated, elegant tannins providing structure and an intense, persistent length to the finish.
Vintage Conditions In the Clare Valley, the growing season leading up to vintage 2017 saw above average winter rainfall. Weather conditions during flowering were favourable and fruit set was good across all varieties. Harvest began in late February and picking continued at a slow and steady rate until early May due to the prevailing mild conditions. Overall, or winemakers have declared the vintage to be above average vintage in terms of quantity and fruit quality.
In Coonawarra, a cool growing season and above average winter rains leading into the vintage saw the region return to what could be best described as a more traditional Coonawarra vintage. Cooler conditions delayed budburst and this was followed by a mild summer although there was a welcome spell of warmth in late January. A late start to vintage meant many were concerned with the highly variable weather that can occur into late autumn. Overall, winemakers report wines of good quality with the reds showing deep colour and elegant fruit flavours.
Oak Maturation The wine was matured in French oak barrels (50% 1 year old, 50% a combination of 2 and 3 year old) for a period of 10 to 12 months before being bottled.
Cellaring Notes Crafted for immediate enjoyment but will cellar over a long term under ideal conditions.

Classic cabernet sauvignon, with a strong varietal identity of cassis, black berry, herbs, cigar box and eucalypt with a seasoning of smoky oak. Youthful wine that's a tad locked in right now but should develop well with bottle age.

I do like Clare Valley Cabernet - here married to that from Coonawarra - it seems to consistently present in a brighter manifestation. There's hints of gum leaf in the mix too. Altogether it adds up to a bright and somewhat more fruity representation. The palate shows silken tannins that cascade across the palate, hints of choc-mint bring with them blue and black fruits in an effortless flow. This would win many fans. Good to go now, and rewarding short term cellaring up to 2027.

Clare Valley stalwarts, producer and variety. It’s sure-footed. It’s bold but well-shaped. It tastes of spearmint and chocolate, blackcurrant and the sweet side of tar, and while there’s a general fragrant herb presence it doesn’t rub its variety in your face. It tastes like red wine, bold but balanced, satisfying if not sensational. A decent lick of tannin is the icing on a pretty convincing cake.

From a cold, wet year before the drought started, but long hang time allowed full ripening. Grapes are de-stemmed but not crushed, so around 20% whole berries. Long cool ferment. There's a fine Cabernet expression here, with a touch of olive and background herbaceous character, but much more minty black fruit and a touch of violet perfume comes through. The palate is medium-bodied and super juicy, lots of zip and freshness, plus there's a gamy, ripe nuance to the black berries. There's a smoothing, chocolaty quality to the oak and to the tannin profile, giving this creamy and supple qualities too. A lovely style.

Blackberries and wood smoke, dark plums and black currant, some scents of coco and sweet meat. there’s no mistaking the light char to the oak and gentle sweetness this brings to the bouquet. On the palate - fruity, toasty, dark spices of clove and vanilla, wood smoke and sweetness. Fine easy tannins, medium acidity and with a lengthy finish. Balanced and well made. Drink now and through 2022.

True to modern Australian form, the Jaraman series sees blending from prime regions for the varieties. This time we get the juxtaposition of Clare Valley and Coonawarra. Multi layered and wonderfully dark: Black olive, black currant, blackberry, mint choc, fine ash cand cigar spice, bay, earthy peat, intense vanilla bean. A whiff of high spirit, black cherry liqueur, walnut creme bush tea, musky okaky sweetness. Whew. Medium-Full bodied, but carries itself handsomely: nothing flabby or hollow. Darkly savoury and keenly mineral herb edged, intense and black hearted. Black currant and smoky with gauze sheets of medium fine tannin. The finish carries a tang of acidity. Some toasted and sweet coconutty oak and a touch of heat at the finish are slight distractions from an otherwise well put together wine.

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of grapes with 56% from the Clare Valley north of Adelaide and 44% from Coonawarra on the south coast of South Australia. It was aged for 10 to 12 months in 50% one year old and 50% two to three year old French oak, which flatters the classic, highly age worthy Cabernet Sauvignon grape. This wine is dry with rich, dark blackcurrant and blackberry flavours leading on the palate of this full bodied red with relatively high alcohol of 14.5% ABV. The 2017 vintage began in late February following a growing season with above average winter rainfall in the Clare Valley where veraison was late due to cool wet conditions from October through to December. The Coonawarra grapes, in the meantime, also experienced a relatively cool growing season and above average winter rain leading into vintage. Despite these challenging growing conditions, this wine is elegant, smooth and savoury with promise of at least 10 years worth of aging ahead of it.

Earthy and gamey aromas, with a hint of good ol’ Vegemite. Medium to full bodied wine with liquorice, mocha, dark berry fruits and anise. A dry finish. A sturdy cabernet that really would shine with food to match. My suggestion – BBQ steak, or a rich, tomato vege lasagne.

Classy blend of Clare Valley and Coonawarra cabernet, from a cool vintage, brings you the best from a producer intent on combining old world estate-styled viticulture with new world wine wizardry. Judge for yourself with this bold, herby, blackstrap, eucalyptus and cassis-sweet red.
