St. Andrews Shiraz 2018

Enormously flavoursome with rich fruit characters of black cherry, plum and ripe berries. American oak adds nuances of vanilla, cigar box, coffee and toast.

Tasting Notes

Nose: The wine has concentrated layers of violets, liquorice, chocolate, cinnamon, coffee, mocha and creamy vanillin aromas. Very rich and reminiscent of liquor cherries in rum & raisin ice cream.

Palate:This is a voluptuous wine with great mid palate expression, layers of flavour and yet great balance. Fresh red berry fruits are cradled across the palate by mocha and vanilla spice flavours from high quality oak. The barrel fermentation results in a wine that has well integrated fruit and oak and harmonious, elegant flavours and a long persistent finish.

Colour: At release, the wine has a concentrated ruby red colour with a dark purple hue to the edge.

Oak Maturation:

Vintage Condition: The growing season was characterised as warm and dry for vintage 2018, the only year in recent times warmer was 2016, which produced some excellent, award-winning wines. One of the great things about this vintage, though, was that we avoided any major heatwaves during vintage which can be very damaging and so to that end, vintage was relatively calm and controlled. Overall, our winemaking team are very excited about the quality of the wines from this vintage. In terms of the red varieties, these wines have deep colours and distinct varietal characters.

Cellaring Notes: Crafted for immediate enjoyment but will cellar over a long term under ideal conditions.
