A cellar built with family. A collection filled with memories. A story worth sharing.
Every wine cellar tells a story. Beyond the bottles and carefully collected vintages are the people, traditions and moments that make each collection unique.
As part of our Beneath the Bottles series, we invited wine lovers to share the stories behind their collections. We were delighted to select Sam from Earlwood, NSW, whose cellar is a beautiful reflection of family, heritage and a lifelong appreciation for wine.
A tradition that began in Sicily
Sam's love of wine began in the 1960s, when his parents immigrated to Australia from Sicily, bringing with them the tradition of making wine at home.
As a young boy, Sam remembers helping his father crush grapes barefoot in a large tub, before the family could afford a proper grape crusher. It's a memory that has stayed with him ever since.
Today, that same tradition continues with Sam's children and grandchildren, connecting generations through a shared love of wine.
A cellar 39 years in the making
Built alongside his father 39 years ago, Sam's wine cellar sits beneath his family home, carved into the sandstone over 12 months of digging, drilling and building by hand.
What began as a practical space to store wine has become a much-loved gathering place for family and friends. From sharing cheese platters and homemade wine with his father to opening treasured vintages with loved ones, the cellar has hosted countless special moments.
Every detail has its own story, too. A collection of hats represents Sam's travels and friendships, while a decorative wheel and wine barrel were thoughtful gifts from a close friend.
A special connection to Taylors
For more than a decade, Taylors Wines has held a special place in Sam's collection.
One particularly memorable experience was a trip to the Clare Valley with three other wine-loving couples, where a visit to Taylors became a highlight of their journey. Sam fondly recalls the warm hospitality, memorable tasting experience and the generous selection of wines the group took home.
Today, his cellar features favourites from our Masterstroke, St Andrews, Winemaker's Project and Heritage ranges. If he had to choose, Sam's standout wines would be the St Andrews Chardonnay and St Andrews Shiraz.
More than a collection
For Sam, wine has always been about bringing people together.
His cellar is a place where family traditions live on, friendships are celebrated and memories are made, one bottle at a time. As Sam beautifully puts it: "We believe wine is a symbol of friendship, happiness and a connection to our past."
Sam's story reminds us that the true value of a wine collection isn't simply found in the bottles we keep, but in the people and moments we share them with.
Because beneath every bottle, there's a story worth telling.
